Most people encounter an ADDrest room at the moment it’s finished: the bed rises silently toward the ceiling, the room opens up entirely, and what was a bedroom seconds ago is now a living space, an office, a place for something else entirely. What they don’t see is the years of engineering, testing, iteration, and craft that made that single, seamless moment possible.

This is the story of how an ADDrest room actually comes to life.

It Starts With a Question, Not a Drawing

ADDrest wasn’t born in a design studio. It was born from a very practical observation made by founder Simon Maurer after more than 18 years working in real estate and overseeing the construction and sale of over 12,000 apartments.

The question was this: if a bed occupies a room 24 hours a day but is only used for about 8 of them, what’s happening to the other 16? What’s the cost in rent, in energy, in resources of a space that only does one thing?

That question became the design brief. Not “how do we make a stylish bed” but “how do we make a space that works as hard as the people living in it?” The answer pointed upward.

The Idea: Send the Bed to the Ceiling

The core innovation of the ADD Comfort system is vertical. Rather than folding a bed against a wall which still consumes wall space, requires a cabinet structure, and demands that the user tidy and strap the bedding before every lift, the ADD Comfort bed rises straight up toward the ceiling using two synchronized electric motors.

The distinction matters enormously in practice. You don’t fold anything, secure anything, or adjust anything. You can leave the bed exactly as it is (sheets, duvet, pillows) and raise it with a single movement. The legs retract automatically as the bed ascends. The room below clears completely. No cabinet, no wall unit, no visual clutter. Just open floor space, ready for whatever the day needs.

The ADD Motion Wall applies the same vertical logic to room configuration. Rather than a fixed partition permanently dividing a floor plan, the wall rises to the ceiling on demand at the press of a button, creating either a fully open space or a private, enclosed room in seconds.

From Concept to Engineered System

Getting to that effortless moment takes work that is anything but effortless.

The engineering challenge with a ceiling-mounted bed is that the margin for error is essentially zero. Load distribution, counterbalancing, structural stress at ceiling attachment points, the behavior of the lifting mechanism under years of daily use, all of it has to be specified correctly before a single prototype is built. ADDrest approaches this through German engineering and manufacturing, where precision is a baseline requirement, not a premium option.

The design process moves from concept through detailed technical drawings, material selection, and prototype development: each stage feeding information back into the previous one. When a prototype reveals unexpected stress on a component under daily use, the drawings change. When materials perform differently than specified under real conditions, the specification is revised. The system is iterated until every movement is smooth, every load is distributed correctly, and every element behaves identically on the thousandth cycle as it did on the first.

The soft-start and soft-stop system which controls the speed of ascent and descent to prevent jarring movement, is one example of engineering that only becomes visible when it’s absent. When it works perfectly, you don’t notice it. You just notice that the bed moves exactly the way a well-made thing should.
